The Project: Take a backyard the falls into the woods and use it to frame out our perfect escape from the suburbs. Design a pool that is easy to get into, a spa we can enjoy all year, and make our back yard time last longer.
The Escape: The result is Project Greythorne in Pittsford, NY. The pool features are simple yet robust enough to fit every age, from the swim ledge to the waterfall features. The spa and fire pit are closer to the house, giving this outdoor family quick access to the warm resources in the colder months.

Design Features
Waterfalls
The addition of waterfall isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. In the world of suburban neighbors and busy lives surrounding the house, the waterfall can buffer can create an ambient sound that allows you to help push the outside world out. This design is all about balance. Three waterfalls balance the transition to nature along the far side of the pool with integrated lighting. Both the operation and lighting colors can be controlled from the mobile app, making it easy to bring them online when suburban atmosphere creeps in too close and we need a distraction.
Baja Shelf / Swimout
Not quite in the water, not quite out of the water, the baja shelf is the perfect spot to watch a day disappear and work on a tan. A few inches of water allows you to sit cool, while soaking the sun. In this case the shelf is a perfect transition for the kids in the family, who are quickly becoming swimmers.
Fire
The fire-pit is separate from the pool, but every part of the design for the family. Close to our own hearts, they wanted a place to gather after a swim, enjoy some s’mores with the kids and extend the cooler evenings just a little longer. The fire is the perfect bug deterrent and placing it closer to the house allows for a nice buffer from nature. A subtle surrounding wall, can act as a ledge if the Adirondack chairs aren’t out yet and keep the youngsters from running around the fire.
In Water Lighting
LED lighting has really changed the scope of what we can do to make a pool transform at night. Everything from controlling colors remotely to smaller, low maintenance lights are making it really fun to design the right lighting layout. For this pool, we added lights near the features and the entry points, giving us clean accents and safe transitions at night. The waterfalls are in sync with the lighting and colors can be adjusted to fit the mood.
The Spa
Some spas are better suited along side of the pool and sometimes its best to escape to a separate area. Integrated into the same control system, this spa was best suited away from the pool, where the family could step out of the door and slip into heated comfort long into the cooler season. The system is controlled by the same mobile app so the temperature can be perfect every time.
Pool Equipment Features
Automatic Fill Canister
Utilizing an automatic fill canister, you never have to refill your own pool water again. The system is buried parallel to the pool surface and incorporates a float system that matched the level of your pool. When your water drops low, the connected water line is opened from a valve and water enters the pool. It is a mechanical system with no electronics without incurring costs to maintain a perfect water level.
In-Floor Cleaning
The problem with pools is that sediment and debris can settle in areas and collect around the floor of the pool. An in-floor cleaning system changes that entire concept. By spacing out retractable water jets around the floor and stairs of the pool, water can be diverted to flow in different directions, preventing any dirt from settling. You can adjust the schedule of when it runs, and change the patterns of flow to truly optimize your pool cleaning, without any effort.
Ultraviolet Water Sanitizer
While your pool filter works to keep your water visibly clear, an ultraviolet water sanitizer takes care of all the things you can’t see. As water circulates through the sanitizer chamber the UV light immediately inactivates 99.9% of micro-organisms and algae which are resistant to chlorine.
Pool Heater
A pool heater can dramatically increase and extend your swimming season. For an outdoor pool it means extra months of fun, for an indoor pool it means perfect water year round. With a titanium immersed heating element, these heaters have reached an incredible 96% thermal efficiency.
